Why audiobooks count as reading for kids.

Have you ever heard someone say audiobooks are “cheating”? As an elementary teacher, I hear it a lot, and I’m here to help you win that argument. Listening to a book is reading. Here’s why.

Audiobooks spark

Imagination

Empathy

Critical thinking

Language and expression
Vocabulary growth

Listening to audiobooks lets kids hear fluent, expressive reading while being exposed to new vocabulary and sentence structures they might not yet read on their own.
Comprehension skills

Audiobooks build the same comprehension skills as print: predicting, inferring, analyzing, and connecting.
Books are books

Whether your kid reads it with their eyes or their ears, they’re still living inside a story. That counts.
Access to higher-level texts

Kids can enjoy stories above their independent reading level, making reading feel exciting and successful.
