Books That Get Read
These books are meant to make reading fun, interesting and make 8-9-year-olds want to come back for more. Sometimes we get so hung up on the length of the book or what a friend’s child is reading, and we miss the right fit for our own readers. In a fast-paced world, we need books that kids will actually pick up, these did just that.
These books are full of pictures, are not too long, and were literally tested on kids in my life: my students and my nieces and nephews. Scroll down for information on each book.

4 Books to Get Reluctant Readers Started

Desmond Cole Ghost Patrol (series) by Andres Miedoso
Ages 7–10
This series has 27 books and hits the mark on books for beginner readers, or reluctant readers. They are not too long, have lots of fun pictures, and each story follows a new mystery. The characters work together, but not in a cheesy way — in a way that gets kids reading.

Supa Nova by Chanté Timothy
Ages 7-9
Nova (nicknamed Supa Nova), a young Black girl with a deep passion for science and fixing the world’s problems. Lots of colorful illustrations in this graphic novel.

Sadiq (series) by Siman Nuurali
Ages 8-10
Sadiq is in third grade, his family is from Somalia, and he loves exploring. This series is a great beginner chapter book that focuses on positive family interactions, learning to learn more about the world, and friendships. There are 17 books in this series.

Long Distance by Whitney Gardner
Ages 7-11
This graphic novel was a total hit with my nephews, aged 7 and 11. Vega is miserable about moving from Portland to Seattle and leaving her best friend behind. When her parents send her to summer camp to make new friends, strange things start happening, and she has to team up with her bunkmates to figure out what’s going on.
