Books That Keep Kids’ Interest

These books are meant to make reading fun, interesting, and make 10–11-year-olds want to come back for more. At this age, it’s easy to get hung up on page counts, reading levels, or what a friend’s child is reading, and miss the right fit for our own readers. Kids this age are juggling more than ever, and in a fast-paced world we need books they’ll actually choose over a screen. These did just that.

These books have short chapters, lots of humour and visuals, and stories that feel grown-up enough for this age group without being overwhelming. They were tested on the kids in my life: my students and my nieces and nephews. Scroll down for information on each book.

4 Books to Get Reluctant 10-11yr olds

The Codebreaker Crew (series) by Cara Stevens
Ages 9-11

There are 3 books in this series. Kids work together to… break codes. (!!) The fun part of this is that the chapters are short, and there are puzzles that the reader tries to solve before moving on to the next page.

The Crossover Collection by Kwame Alexander
Ages 10-13

This collection is all the rage with students who are resistant to reading chapter books — they are all written in verse, and there are some super cool drawings mixed in it. They explore the complexity of sports, family bonds, coming-of-age hurdles, and deep personal grief.

Lucky Scramble by Peter Raymundo
Ages 8-12

Super cool chapter book mixed with graphic novel storytelling about speed cubing. Even the font is so cool; it looks like someone literally wrote it out on the page. This book follows the personal journeys of a group of diverse cubers looking to make their mark on the coveted speedcubing national championship.

Hamter Princess (series) by Ursula Vernon
Ages 7-11

There are 6 books in this fun series. It is a funny, action-packed children’s graphic novel series that retells classic fairy tales from a rodent perspective. The books look thick, but there are many drawings and the writing is larger. Great series to have on hand.
